How Tens Machines Work
The TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) delivers electrical signals through conductive electrode pads to stimulate the nerves under your skin. These signals act in two ways: they block the transmission of pain signals traveling in nearby nerves, stopping them going through the spinal cord to the brain, and they send their own message to the brain, triggering the release of endorphin - the body's own natural pain killer.

What is TENS ?
Transcutaneous = Through the skin. Electronic= Using controled electrical signals, electronics etc. Nerve = Nerves are part of the central nervous systems and are responsible for carring sense (and pain!) singnals to the brain. Stimulation= Tens stimulates the nerves by electrical currents.
Tens is used for treating many types of pain, often used for treating muscular pains, back pains and the other types of pain highlighted later. Most TENS machines operate using fairly low voltages.
What Pain is TENS useful For?
People have reported good results from using TENS machines and TENS therapy for many types of pain and ailment. The effectiveness of TENS therapy of course varies from patient to patient and case by case.
Pain is the bodies warning sign to tell the brain there is a problem in the body. In nature, this is useful - a dog with a thawn in it's paw feels the pain and tries not to walk on the bad leg, or may lick the infection helping to remove the thawn, it's saliva will help too kill bacteria and kill the wound. Some types of pain are totally useless to us, we already know we have a bad back and not to do anything to strenous, since common sense and education tells us that would be bad for our condition. However we still have to live with the pain. So we look for ways to reduce or eliminate our pain.
